MOTHER WHO TORTURED HER 17 MONTHS OLD SON TO DEATH RELEASED

Tracey Connelly, 32, was jailed indefinitely with a minimum of five years in May 2009 after she allowed her 17-month-old son Peter to be tortured to death by her lover.

Last night, sources confirmed Connelly had been freed from jail after being granted parole earlier this month.

It was reported that Connelly will be given a new name and hairstyle in an attempt to live her life anonymously – but not a full new identity.

The news comes days after it emerged that sacked child protection boss Sharon Shoesmith, whose council department failed to protect the child, is to receive almost £700,000 for unfair dismissal.

Baby Peter suffered more than 50 injuries, including a broken back, over an eight-month period despite being registered as at-risk and repeated visits to his home by Haringey Children’s services and NHS health professionals.

He died in hospital after being found in his blood-stained cot at his mother’s flat in Tottenham, north London in August 2007.

Connelly admitted the offence soon after being charged and served several hundred days on remand. She admitted she did nothing while her boyfriend, Steven Barker, and his paedophile brother, Jason Owen, tortured Peter to death.

In October, a parole board concluded that Connelly posed ‘no danger to the public’ and should be released from jail. The news outraged relatives of Baby Peter’s father, who said she should never be let out.

A Probation Service source said Connelly could be ‘smuggled’ out of jail to avoid her being attacked.

Barker and Owen are both currently in prison - Barker was given a life sentence after being convicted of rape in a separate case, while Owen was returned to jail earlier this year after apparently breaching his bail conditions.
